Yes, it is possible to use a shroud, in combination with a carrier, for cremation. Some crematoria require the use of a Cremation input board when the carrier doesn't have a flat bottom plate. Always contact the crematorium or the funeral director you are working with, to be sure what the requirements are.

Can a shroud be purchased now and be stored for a long time?

A shroud can be stored for years, as long it is kept in a dry, dark space. It's best to place the shroud in a cotton cover or a pillowcase. Make sure to keep out moths, for they can damage the silk fibers.
