Shroud folding instructions
Wrapping a loved one yourself is a loving act that is not difficult to perform. With the specially developed folding instruction shroud from Wikkelgoed you can easily wrap the deceased yourself at home. We have created separate instructions for open and closed wake.
Folding instructions for a shroud for open burial
For an open wake, you can fold the shroud so that the head remains visible, surrounded by the cloth of the shroud. The cloth can be draped nicely around the face as a soft frame. For a wake at home, this way of folding is often preferred, the deceased is then pleasantly present in the room. This makes the deceased feel close.
Folding method for closed burial
In a closed wake, the folding starts the same as in an open wake, but then the head is also covered. This is done in the same way as with the feet. You can choose to fold a piece every day, so that the deceased is wrapped step by step, at your own pace. This covering is often experienced as an important and loving ritual. The folding method for a closed wake is often used for the day of the funeral.
Wrapping a loved one yourself is often seen as a symbol for saying goodbye. By being close to the body and by covering it, the farewell becomes tangible. This is a first step in the grieving process that can be done in a circle of family or friends. After wrapping, mementos, such as notes or flowers, can be placed between the folds of the shroud. This makes saying goodbye even more personal.
