As an advocate of alternative burial methods, we would like to inform you about natural burial grounds. A question that often comes up is how much a burial ground costs, and to what extent this differs from the costs of a regular burial ground.

How much does a natural burial ground cost?

The costs associated with a natural burial ground can vary greatly. This is because there is a great deal of difference between what the cemeteries offer in terms of burial rights, group graves, urn graves and memorials. In addition, local legislation can play a role and to what extent maintenance and burial are or are not included in the price. The price for a grave for an indefinite period is usually around €2,000 to €3,000. To prevent a place you have in mind from being taken, it is also possible to reserve a place directly.

Natural or regular cemetery?

The costs of a natural burial ground may sound quite high, but compared to the additional costs around a regular cemetery, the total picture is a lot cheaper. No gravestone is needed, which quickly costs a few hundred to a thousand euros. In addition, the costs are one-off, unlike a regular cemetery where burial rights must be purchased periodically. A cremation quickly costs €1,200, - with the optional costs of burying the urn.

How much does an urn grave in nature cost?

Natural burial grounds also offer the possibility to bury an urn or to scatter the ashes in a grave. Scattering ashes in a natural burial ground is usually not possible because it is harmful to nature. The price of an urn grave in a natural burial ground is between €950 and €4,250. In general, the burial itself costs around €500 and the burial of an urn €300.

Prices per municipality

As with regular cemeteries, there is no fixed price for a grave, it varies per region, municipality, or in this case per cemetery. The current natural burial grounds vary in size and type of nature, which makes it difficult to ask the same price for everything. It is more difficult to dig a grave in some types of soil than in others. That is why there are also cemeteries that let the price of a grave depend on the chosen location. To be sure of the price you pay for a grave and the right burial place, it is possible to reserve a grave in advance.

Other costs

Most natural burial grounds require the use of naturally degradable materials. These include our Shrouds and Boards , which also differ in cost from a painted coffin. A simple coffin often costs around €900, and an extensive solid wooden coffin can easily cost €1000. €2,000 - €5,000.
