Design of The Embrace

The Embrace was designed by visual artist Valentine Kempynck, who dedicated herself to making shrouds after a successful career as a costume designer. The Embrace is a woollen shroud on which six different arms are embroidered. These are folded over the deceased one by one and tied shut, as a final embrace. This covering can be done by the relatives, possibly spread out over the day or even over several days. Because each arm is a separate strip, each person can close their own part of the embrace. Finally, the upper part is covered with 2 hands that rest on the head.

Symbolism

The relatives (and/or the dying person) can determine who the individual arms represent. Often each arm symbolizes someone who was close to the deceased. In this way, all loved ones can be represented in the farewell, including those who cannot be physically present or those who died earlier. Of course, you can also fill in the symbolism of the arms yourself.

Personalisation

Since everyone's story is unique, there is also the possibility to personalize the shroud. As a family, you enter a conversation with Valentine to decide who is involved and how each arm will be depicted. Together you think about how many arms will be on the shroud, and of which gender and ages they will be. Valentine helps you along the way, to make sure the shroud really becomes yours. Contact us in time if you want a personalized Embrace, at least 10 days before the funeral, but preferably earlier.

Miniature version

Alongside the shroud you can order a miniature with a doll in it. This can be used by the family to prepare the moment together: for whom is which arm, how does the closing work, in what order, etc. In addition to this practical purpose, you can also use the miniature version to mentally prepare children for the process.
In the end, it also serves as a lasting tangible memory of the farewell, which is quite unique. This version comes with a piece of woolen fabric with a hand embroidered on it.

How is The Embrace folded?

The Embrace is placed over the body arm by arm, each one easily secured with strings. The pieces are connected at the bottom, making it easy to position correctly. Folding instructions are included.

Can a shroud be used for cremation?

Yes, it is possible to use a shroud, in combination with a carrier, for cremation. Some crematoria require the use of a Cremation input board when the carrier doesn't have a flat bottom plate. Always contact the crematorium or the funeral director you are working with, to be sure what the requirements are.

Can a shroud be purchased now and kept for a long time?

Yes. The shroud can be stored for a long time in its cardboard box or a cotton cover. A cool, dry space would be best. Make sure to keep out moths, for they can damage the wool fibers.
