Several of Wikkelgoed's shrouds and other products are made from Dutch wool: a beautiful, natural material that often remains unused. By choosing local wool, we contribute to sustainability, nature conservation, and the revaluation of an age-old resource.

Dutch wool - from sheep to shrouds

Local, natural and sustainable

Over a million sheep graze in the Netherlands. This yields between 1.5 and 2 million kilos of wool annually. Yet, a large portion of this wool is considered a byproduct. Because its market value is extremely low, and the supply is plentiful, Dutch wool is often burned or shipped in bulk to countries like China, where it is processed cheaply. Both options are far from sustainable and do not do justice to the value of this natural resource.

By choosing Dutch-grown wool products, you contribute to a circular economy where this material is truly valued. Wool is a beautiful, renewable material that breathes well, insulates, and is completely biodegradable. A wool shroud is therefore not only warm and natural, but also a conscious, sustainable choice.

Sheep flocks and nature management

Many Dutch sheep flocks are used in nature reserves, where they contribute to the maintenance of heathlands, dunes, and other vulnerable landscapes. The sheep keep vegetation under control, ensuring the survival of plant and animal species dependent on open terrain. This way, flocks play a vital role in preserving biodiversity.

By using wool from these herds, a beautiful connection is created between people, landscape, and product. This not only supports the farmers and shepherds but also the continued existence of valuable natural resources in our country.

From sheep to shrouds

The process wool goes through before it can be processed into a product is careful and artisanal. Everything starts with the sheep, which are shorn in the spring. This is important for the animal's well-being and simultaneously produces wool that we can use for products like shrouds.

After shearing, the wool is sorted by quality and color. It is then washed. In our case, this is done locally, just across the border in Belgium. This is done with mild soaps to remove most of the lanolin (wool fat), sand, and dirt. The wool we use for our products still contains a small amount of dirt, as no chemical cleaning takes place. The fibers are then combed or carded to prepare them for spinning or felting.

The fabric for our Thick wool shroud , Rondomrond , and Wikkelbaar is made by (machine) needle-felting at a Dutch production facility. This is remarkable, as most wool production facilities have disappeared from the Netherlands. Sustainability is paramount during processing, as is preserving the wool's original, natural appearance. Finally, the wool fabric is made into a shroud at a local sewing workshop – everything stays as close to the source as possible.

Other wool products

Besides wool shrouds, we also offer other products made from Dutch wool. These include a soft pillow filled with sheep's wool, a wool mat , and a sheepskin mattress. Our Wool shroud strap is also made from Dutch wool, which is then knitted into a sturdy band.

A choice with impact

By choosing a wool blanket or other products made from Dutch wool, you're choosing a short supply chain, minimal environmental impact, and maximum connection to the product's origins. You prevent unnecessary transport and waste, support landscape management, and contribute to the revaluation of local resources.

Wool is therefore not a residual product, but a valuable, sustainable raw material that is brought back to life with care and craftsmanship – in a product that literally envelops, warms and connects.
