Shrouds and their symbolism - La sacra Sindone
Shrouding the dead has acquired a rich amount of symbolism throughout history. In various cultures and rituals, this act has been interpreted in its own way, leading to many different meanings. Every week we share a story from the rich cultural history of the shroud.
La sacra Sindone: 'The Holy Shroud'
Although it is not a custom in Christianity, the shroud is central to the story of Jesus Christ in the Bible: 'And he bought a linen cloth, and wrapped him in the linen cloth, and laid him in a tomb that was hewn out of rock; and he rolled a stone to the door of the tomb' (Mark 15:46). A mixture of Myrrh and Aloe (a precious, sweet-smelling wood) was placed in the cloth with the body, two elements of holy anointing oil. This placement of fragrant spices is a special ritual, even for people outside this specific religion. Scent is not often thought about at a funeral, while it is something that can bring back vivid memories.
