A sustanable funeral

Wikkelgoed and sustainability

In the Netherlands, the realization that a shroud and carrier are an alternative to a coffin is growing increasingly. In addition to offering the possibility of a personal funeral, it also offers the possibility of a more environmentally friendly farewell. All undyed fabrics that we use are naturally biodegradable and organically or sustainably produced. In order to use a shroud at a farewell or funeral, a carrier is also required, this is a portable stretcher on which the body is placed. Our Carriers are also sustainable and naturally biodegradable. In order to guarantee our sustainability, we work with various labels and foundations.

Sustainable funeral

We are committed to making funerals as natural as possible. Our shrouds and carriers are all made of natural materials. Even down to the smallest detail: the stitching of the shrouds is made of cotton thread instead of nylon thread. We believe that environmentally friendly is only truly environmentally friendly if it is 100% environmentally friendly - that is our ideology. Every day we come a step closer to a sustainable world with more organic funerals.

Our balance

The fact that we are a sustainable company means that we keep these three components in balance:

  • People : We find it very important that our products are made under good working conditions. That is why most our products have the GOTS certificate.
  • Planet : In order to treat nature well, we select only natural materials with a responsible origin. Bamboo and hemp are two fast-growing materials that are easy to grow in an environmentally friendly way.
  • Profit : We invest our profit in the development of our products and producers. Although much is produced sustainably and environmentally friendly already, there is always something to improve in the process. We continue to work on developing our company in a positive direction.

Greenleave

GreenLeave has drawn up a number of strict sustainability criteria together with the Natuur & Milieu foundation. These criteria are regularly revised. Producers and suppliers of funeral products can submit their products to GreenLeave for testing. If a product meets the criteria, the 'GreenLeave approved label' may be used for it. The material used, its origin and the production process are examined. GreenLeave must be informed of any changes to this process and must grant permission to use the label again. This allows the funeral customer to immediately see which products have been produced with care for sustainability. Our Thick wool shroud, the Hemp shroud, our Shroud straps, the Willow shell and the Willow carrier, among others, meet these sustainability criteria. In our product overview, you can click on the 'GreenLeave' filter to see all the featured products.

The Willow carrier and the Willow shell are both made of naturally grown pruning wood from Dutch willow trees. The use of this wood is especially sustainable, since the pruning wood would otherwise have to be thrown away. Instead, we recycle it, a beautiful reference to the endless cycle of life and death.

The GOTS certificate

The GOTS certificate is an all-round critical label that concerns textile production. Textiles go through a large number of steps before they are finally available as a garment or, in our case, a shroud. This production chain consists of harvesting the raw materials, responsible production, labeling, the packaging process and distribution. All facets of this chain must separately comply with the standard for organic textiles. Our Soft shroud, Canvas shroud, Denim shroud and Basic shroud are GOTS certified .
