The wake

The wake is an important moment in the process of saying goodbye. During a wake, the person is placed on a carrier, and relatives can say farewell in a personal way. This can be done in a funeral home, but also at home or in another place that meant something to the deceased. When the wake takes place at home, there are various options. Sometimes the body is displayed in bed and sometimes in a closed or open coffin. In addition, there is the option of doing this on a wooden surface that can also be carried during a funeral: the carrier.

Why use a carrier?

When using a carrier instead of a coffin, the body is less concealed during the ceremony. In this case, the body is wrapped in a shroud, a soft cloth that can be opened or closed at will. Together, a shroud and carrier invite you to be close to the person one last time. When the shroud is closed, the combination offers a perfect middle ground between distance and proximity.

Various carriers

Carriers, or stretchers, can take many forms. For example, there are woven baskets, tied branches and specially shaped hardwood. All carriers can be carried by six people. Sometimes a crematorium requires that carriers have a flat bottom.
