The design of the Curved Carrier
The Curved carrier was designed by Joost Romeyn, product developer and furniture maker. The idea for this carrier came about years ago, he says. Joost had been looking for a suitable curved shape for a carrier for some time and was eventually inspired by Viking ships. That's how he came up with a carrier with a shape that resembles the waves of the Atlantic Ocean.
Viking traditions
In the past, the Vikings would place their deceased on a boat, to give them to the sea. Nowadays, our bodies are only buried or cremated. However, sailing out a loved one is a beautiful ritual. 'Water is the balance between heaven and earth' says Joost, in appreciation of this old tradition. The round, wavy shape of the carrier offers a reminder of this old ritual.
The Curved carrier
The Curved carrier is made of slightly curved beech plywood. The texture of this light wood is surprisingly soft. The simple shape makes it a sober, functional carrier. This makes the carrier easy to combine with our various shrouds. There are three recesses on both sides of the carrier with which it can be carried.
