What does Wikkelgoed do?

Wikkelgoed offers shrouds and carriers as an alternative to a coffin. We also offer many matching accessories. Our products are almost all 100% natural and sustainably made, making them an environmentally conscious choice. With Wikkelgoed products, you can organize a personal and gentle funeral.

What is a shroud and why would you choose one?

A shroud is a rectangular cloth which is used to shroud the body. Shrouding is an increasingly popular alternative to the traditional coffin, which enables a personal and sustainable approach to saying goodbye. A shroud is to be used in combination with a carrier, on which the body is carried. Our shrouds are made of natural fabrics, in line with our vision of a natural farewell. They are designed with simplicity in mind, allowing the bereaved to personalize their farewell.

Is a shroud an alternative to a coffin?

Yes. Since 1991, the Netherlands has permitted the use of funeral coverings other than a coffin, such as shrouds e. The use of a bier or stretcher is required. A shroud is generally suitable for burial and cremation, but we recommend consulting with the funeral director regarding your specific situation. Read more about funerals without a coffin.

Is a carrier required when using a shroud?

When a shroud is used solely for a display of the body, for example at home, the use of a carrier is not mandatory. However, to use the shroud as an alternative to a coffin at a burial or cremation, a carrier is required.

Why would I want to shroud a loved one myself?

Shrouding is often experienced as a cherished farewell ritual. Before a funeral, cremation, or display, the family takes a moment with the deceased. Together, they prepare themselves and the body for the final farewell. It's a moment of connection and a first step in the grieving process. We'd be happy to tell you more about the value of folding a shroud.

Where can I view or buy your products?

You can order all our products directly through our webshop. Some products can be viewed at our office in Ankeveen upon request.

Can I order the products myself or will the funeral director do this?

You can order our products directly through our webshop. Alternatively, you can have your funeral director do this for you.

How do I find a funeral director who is familiar with the use of shrouds?

There's a growing number of funeral directors that are experienced in using shrouds. That's why we've compiled a list of affiliated funeral directors for you. These funeral directors work with us and have experience with our products. You can see which company is located near you on a map on this page.

Products and materials

What type of fabrics do you use and why?

Which products are GreenLeave approved?

which shrouds are GOTS certified?

Which products are organically produced?

Several of our products are organically produced: the Denim shroud, the Soft shroud and the Basic shroud that is part of the Basic set.

What makes Wikkelgoed's wool sustainable?

What makes our wool special is that it's locally produced. In recent years, wool mills have disappeared from the Netherlands. Most raw wool is now exported as a byproduct to Chinese mills or incinerated as waste, which unfortunately has a significant environmental impact. Our wool, however, is locally produced and comes from flocks of sheep used for nature conservation.

Are there options for realizing special requests?

For the Valentine Kempynck's The Embrace, it's possible to personalize the embroidered arms. Please contact us if you're interested. Unfortunately, we can't accommodate other special requests, such as smaller shrouds or additional colors. However, you can always contact us, and we may be able to refer you to someone.

Practical information

What is the best way to fold a shroud?

There are two ways to fold the shroud. Instructions for both are always included with the shroud. At the bottom of this page, it's explained s detail using two animations: Folding a shroud. We've also developed a simpler folding method for the Thick Wool Shroud.

How is the Thick wool shroud folded?

Because the Thick Wool shroud is thicker than most of our shrouds, the standard folding method may not work as well. Therefore, we've developed a simple folding method that allows for a neat fold:

Can a shroud be used for cremation?

Yes, it is legally permitted to organize a burial or cremation with a shroud in the Netherlands. Many crematoria allow this without a problem. Sometimes, the shroud is to be moistened, or a wet sheet is placed over it. This isn't actually necessary for safety reasons; the natural materials are flame retardant. However, crematoria have their own regulations. For more information, please visit our page about Burial without a Coffin.

Can a carrier be used for cremation?

In principle, all our products are suitable for use in the cremation oven. A carrier is required to have a flat bottom plate and a raised edge. Some of our carriers, such as the Willow shell, do not have these features. In such cases, a cremation input board is required. Be sure to contact the crematorium.

Is it mandatory to wear undergarments when using a shroud?

When using a shroud, it's not required to wear underwear, but most people choose to do so. Would you prefer natural undergarments? We offer the Funeral gown for that.

How do you transport a body in a shroud?

You transport a deceased person in a shroud using a carrier. For added stability (or for aesthetic reasons), you can secure the body with one of our shroud straps.

Is it possible that a shroud falls open?

If the shroud is folded as per the instructions, this cannot happen. Furthermore, for safety's sake, we provide two safety pins with each shroud. If you're unsure, due to strong winds or a large body, you can also use a shroud strap to close the shroud. This is a strap that you tie around the shroud (and the carrier for extra stability). This can also be an aesthetic consideration.

How does cooling work for Wikkelgoed products?

Cooling is possible with all our products. With the Basic carrier and the Curved carrier, the unit can be placed underneath. With carriers made of wicker, branches, and bamboo, the cooling unit is placed in/on the bier, because the material transmits cold less effectively if the cooling element were placed underneath. Generally speaking, shrouds don't significantly affect the cooling quality. With thicker shrouds, such as those made of wool, it's sometimes wise to cool the body first and then wrap the shroud. Otherwise, the shroud unnecessarily retains body temperature. The wool mat has little effect on the cooling level, because the fabric is felted in a way that allows air, and therefore cold, to pass through.

Are bodily fluids an issue when using a shroud?

We are often asked how to handle a shroud and fluids. Fluid should not be a problem when using a shroud, as long as it is properly cooled. If necessary, additional cloths can be used to absorb bodily fluids, or a body bag can be placed within the shroud. Thanatopraxia, a light embalming process that preserves the body for 10 days, is also an option. Always discuss this with the funeral director.

Natural burial

What is natural burial?

Natural burial is the burial of the deceased in a nature reserve designated for this purpose. Burial rights in a natural burial site are usually perpetual, and you can choose your burial site during a walk through the area. You can find all the information about natural burial on our natural burial page.

Can you use a shroud at a natural burial ground?

Yes, it is legally permitted to be buried in something other than a coffin. This therefore also applies to natural burial grounds, so using a shroud combined with a stretcher is allowed. However, there are certain requirements, such as the use of biodegradable materials. Always consult with the natural burial ground you are considering to ensure you understand their specific regulations and rules. Read more on our page about natural burials.

Which of your products are allowed for natural burial?

Most of our products are suitable for natural burial. Filter by 'natural burial' in our product overview to see this directly. Most natural burial sites recommend using biodegradable materials, and some even require it. Always check the specific regulations of the natural burial site you're considering.

Is it possible to bury urns on a natural burial site?

In general, urns may also be buried in natural burial grounds. There are often designated burial areas for this purpose. It is usually recommended or required that the urn be made of biodegradable material. It is wise to inquire about the regulations of the cemetery you are considering, as different organizations often have slightly different rules.

What is a Green funeral?

A Green Funeral is organized with products made from sustainable and/or organic materials. For this type of funeral, there are several natural burial grounds throughout the Netherlands. These are natural areas made available as burial grounds based on the idea that "what comes from nature, also goes back to nature." Our products are sustainably and organically produced to align with these principles of a nature-conscious farewell. Read more about Green Funerals.

What is the difference between regualr burial and natural burial?

In a regular cemetery, the graves are arranged in rows, and a grave is assigned. In a natural burial ground, the graves are spread out over a large nature reserve, and the burial site can be chosen freely. In addition, the memorial marker in a regular cemetery is a solid headstone. In a natural burial ground, this can also be a tree disk or a small bush. Read more about natural burial.
