A funeral shroud can feel much warmer and more approachable. The body is closer and the shroud feels soft, making the ceremony of wake a much more personal and intimate experience. The deceased is not completely gone; his or her appearance gives a feeling of closeness. This can be important at the beginning of the grieving process, in accepting the situation and having to say farewell.
