Shrouds and their Symbolism - Egyptian Mummies

Shrouding the dead has acquired a rich amount of symbolism throughout history. In various cultures and rituals, this act has been interpreted in its own way, leading to many different meanings. Every week we share a story from the rich cultural history of the shroud.

Egyptian Mummies

A very well-known form of shrouding is the use of mummification in Egypt. When someone died, the mourning period lasted at least 70 days. During this period, the relatives did not undertake any work and stayed at home. In the meantime, the body was washed and embalmed. At the end of the mourning period, the body was washed again and wrapped in linen straps. Then, the body was dressed with necklaces, bracelets, rings, every form of jewelry. A mask was placed over the head, and the whole was wrapped in a shroud. Finally, the burial took place two and a half months later, a huge difference with the short time we are used to today. Taking this time for the processing process, and the enormous care for the body, testify to an inspiring attention to death, and appreciation of the deceased.
