Shrouds and their Symbolism - Al-Kafan

Shrouding the dead has acquired a rich amount of symbolism throughout history. In various cultures and rituals, this act has been interpreted in its own way, leading to many different meanings. Every week we share a story from the rich cultural history of the shroud.

Al-Kafan: 'the shroud'

Wrapping the deceased is an important tradition in Islam. The deceased are buried in a Kafan, a simple white shroud. This simplicity is of great importance within this tradition, because the shroud may not be expensive. The faith holds care for your loved ones in such high esteem, that even in this last ritual, it is thought that the money better be given to someone who really needs it. In addition, charity is given in the name of the deceased and fasting is done, a form of abstinence that is about becoming aware of the value of what you have. A special tradition that conveys cherishing what you have and giving what you can spare.
